ACCESSIBLE SITES OF CULTURAL AND TOURIST INTEREST


The primary information concerns:
• arrivals of foreigners per means of transport and entrance station,
• arrivals and overnight staying at tourist accommodation units
• hotel capacity,
• tourist visits to museums and archeological sites and finally
• ticket collection for entering museums and archeological sites. 
According to the elaboration of NSSG data for the last decade, carried out by the Observatory of Egnatia Odos, the zone crossed by the Egnatia Motorway covers apercentage of approximately 25% of the tourist arrivals seeking for accommodationand 16% of the respective number seeking for an overnight staying of the total of thecountry, having as main poles the Prefectures of Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Magnissia,Kavala and Pieria.
Generally, during the time period from 1996 to 2006, the tourist accommodation units’ number on the impact zone of the Egnatia Odos Motorway has been substantially increased, surpassing the average increase of the country (45.5% as opposed to 14.4%). During this time period, West Macedonia Region has doubled the amount of tourist accommodation capacity offered (increaseby 100%, the peak noted at the Prefectures of Grevena and Kastoria). A big increase has been observed in the number of hotel units in the Region of Epirus (65.3%, the peak noted at the Prefectures of Ioannina and Arta) and Central Macedonia (57,9%,
with a peak noted at the Municipality of Pella).


A substantial increase has also been observed at several Prefectures of the zone during the period 2000-2006, with an average of positive alteration of 6.3%. The Prefectures with the highest increase are the following: Thesprotia, Arta, Pieria and Halkidiki with alterations for the time period 2005-06 from 7.5% to 30%. During the same time period an increase has beenobserved at the Regions of Central Macedonia (5.5%), East Macedonia & Thrace andEpirus (2.3%), while the Regions of Central Macedonia and Thessaly have shown a reduction of 1% and 0.3% respectively.
